National GeographicCase Study

For over twenty-five years, National Geographic’s Crittercam has provided a unique window into the world of animal behavior for both researchers and the general public through the lens of a camera borne by the animal itself. Crittercam inventor, documentary filmmaker and marine biologist, Greg Marshall, invited Immersive Media to join his team and researchers for the Alaska Whale Foundation in southeast Alaska’s Chatham Strait. Immersive video was ideal to document the experience aboard the team’s small inflatable boats as they attempt to deploy Crittercam on their most challenging subject, the humpback whale. Such close interaction with these magnificent creatures is allowed only under federal permit, but through the multiple lenses of Immersive Media’s 360° video camera, the experience is available to anyone online. A long-form project, “Among Giants,” is currently in development.
